Student sends messages of support on Canadian flag
The massacre of 20 children and six staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecti timberland boots for women cut on Dec. 14 hit Tristan Kong hard.
“My mom is a retired kindergarten teacher and when that day happened she was (working as a supply) teacher,” said Kong, 22, who lives with his mother in the area of Ninth Line and Eglinton Ave. “Her being in a classroom with children of the same age in a city not too far away . made me think how close it was to us.”
Kong graduated last year from the photojournalism program at Loyalist College in Belleville and is now studying advertising and marketing communication at Sheridan College in Oakville.
Kong, his brother Gabe, 26, and their mother, Sharon, watched much of the news coverage of the tragedy on TV. His first impulse was to drive to Newtown and try to help, but he realized that wasn’t practical.
Kong was determined to do something, and a few days later he got the idea of getting everyone he knew to sign his Canadian flag to send it to Sandy H timberland boots for women ook as a show of support. He wasn’t sure if the idea was a good one until friends at a Christmas party got enthused about it.
He had used the flag for a Canada Day photo shoot and his friends, and then family, gladly signed it. He posted photos of it on his Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and more people wanted to sign.
Kong, who is deaf, is also taking it to his dentist’s office in Streetsville so they can sign it.
“I want the timberland boots for women flag to represent the Canadian deaf and hearing community and the diversity of all the people who are living in Ontario who have been thinking of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting,” said Kong. “I want them to know that there are friends who are in Ontario, Canada who have been affected by the sadness. (The signed flag) represents Canadians who have thought about them and are still thinking about them. We hope our thoughts will make them feel better.”
Previously, Kong has helped collect Christmas bags for people in Jamaica, but this was the first project he planned and carried out himself. Then, he also identifi timberland boots for women ed strongly with the victims and their grieving families.
“It is so sad to see all the beautiful angels who had their short lives and all teachers who bravely tried to save those children,” said Kong, who has young cousins. “With my mom being a teacher and all the teachers that I know who would always show such care for their students, and then to read and see the stories of their actions in saving their students made it so, so real for me.”.
